Guide to La Barceloneta and the Seafront
The old harbour, Barcelona’s Port Vell, which stretches from the Columbus Monument to the Barceloneta, offers endless possibilities to enjoy your leisure time, such as Imax, Aquàrium or Maremàgnum, amongst others.
La Barceloneta was once the home of fishermen, people associated with the fishing trade and the metal industry, and is now one of the city’s most visited and popular districts.
In 1992, with the Olympic Games, Barcelona Olympics-inspired redevelopment programme returned a long stretch of coast to life. The Port Olimpic is a busy marina surrounded by restaurants and bars. The area behind Port Olimpic, dominated by two tower blocks (Hotel Arts and Torre Mapfre) is the Vila Olimpica, the living quarters for the olympic participants.
Poblenou now turns its gaze proudly to the sea, satisfied to have it close by. Bordering the Mediterranean Sea and Barcelona’s city beaches to the south, the up-and-coming district of Sant Marti boasts impressive, state-of-the-art buildings such as the Agbar Tower and the Forum complex and a trendy, non-stop nightlife.
More and better beaches stretch northeast along the coast, they reach the huge project known as Diagonal Mar and the Parc del Forum after the five-month Forum held in 2004.
